Healthcare – Who You Gonna Call?

There was never going to be an actual debate about healthcare reform. Republicans in congress are never going to stand against the insurance industry, especially if the charge is being lead by President Obama. Though I find this unfortunately typical of the Party-First Party, but this also allows us to scrape them off and get some real work done.

So, if you support the healthcare reform including a public option, call your members of Congress and let them know! It’s easy and only takes a minute. Ask them if they support the proposed public option for healthcare reform. Tell them you’d like them to. That’s it. Done. Don’t let someone else’s voice speak for you. Call ‘em!

If you’re not sure how you feel about this issue, get informed. Howard Dean’s Netroots Nation town hall one of the best videos I’ve seen on the subject and is a fine place to start.

It’s time… I want to have a talk with some of you. You, my friends that I like and respect… have a problem. You haven’t figured out that myspace.com is totally gay. Simply put, if you’re on myspace.com, you are at least one of the following:

New to blogs and/or the web and this is where you landed first
Sexual preditor
Sexual prey
A musician who is sure that the Indie Rock (and especially their own brand of “unclassifiable” Indie Rock) that has failed for 15 years will succeed any day now
Completely fucking stupid

Myspacers who don’t think they fit any of these choices on this list… you are #5. If you’re #4, you’re almost certainly all of the above. If you fall under #1, that’s fine. After you’ve escaped AOL, you’ll figure this out too. And I think I speak for everyone, especially the #2 folks, when I say… thank you #3s… you and all 1337 of your friends.

Up until very recently, we’ve been forced to endure history from the perspective of a very small minority know as “the Victors”. These lucky son’ bitches have, thankfully, been given notice. Thanks to Wikipedia, victory is no longer a requirement for posterity’s pen.

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that is written by… well… you and me. Anyone with a connection to the internets and the inclination can make contributions. But, keep this in mind… democracy is a bitch and Wikipedia has been the center of some controversies lately. For every person that volunteers to help police the articles there’s another person who will happily deface them. This is the price we pay for a history of the people, by the people.

Personally, I can’t stop myself from using the Random Article feature… but I’m a geek that way.

C-Span, thankfully, is still offering their interview with Jon Stewart. This is not only a must-see but a must-see over and over again. In fact, I demand you watch this at least once a year (and it’s been over a year now since it aired). Oh, and feel free to wash it down with the NPR interview as well. Helps the digestion.

The Sydney Morning Herald is running a story on the lack of style exuding from the World’s IT departments.

“Short sleeved shirts, man-made fibers and the wrong coloured socks were some of the most common fashion faux-pas cited by corporate stylist, Melanie Moss”

Did you notice she uses the “u” in color when she speaks? Classy! I am completely shocked by this clearly important issue, which is completely worthy of my time*.

Project 7th Grade is a program that issues parents free at-home drug test kits to use on their children. Testing is targeted at 7th graders in the hopes of preventing drug use rather than treating it. The website lists the benefits of the kits including: “Having a kit in your home fosters two-way communication between a parent and child”.

Debbie Moak, founder of notmykid.org, outlined the program when recently on the MSNBC show The Situation, hosted by Tucker “The Dick” Carlson. The interview is available as a podcast.

Interestingly, the Journal of School Health published a study on drug testing in schools [pdf] that reported the following in their conclusion: “The two forms of drug testing that are generally assumed to be most promising for reducing student drug use—random testing applied to all students (and, therefore, also likely applied to those in any extracurricular activities, which may come close to encompassing all students), and testing of athletes—did not produce encouraging results.”.

Clearly, somebody here is high…
